Relaxen in de bergen van Kreta.

about3

Milia is located in a mountainous and environmentally sensitive area of Western Crete, at the prefecture of Chania and the center of Kissamos province. Our region belongs to the Natura network of protected areas.

The settlement is surrounded by a green valley formed by the mountains Kefali (Head) and Psilo (High), 550m above sea level. The mountainous landscape offers its distinctiveness to the people and their creations. This landscape defines us and forms our identity.
From day one, when we came up with the idea of the settlement restoration, our philosophy was clear.

“Our priority is to save and preserve the traditional cycle of life, serving both humans and the environment, with a view to the Cretan tradition and respect to the history of the land. It is our duty to promote the culture and the true identity of the region and its people, keeping our eyes open to the present and thefuture.”

GUESTHOUSES

All the guesthouses in Milia are room-houses that pre-existed in the 15th century, carefully refurbished to detail, capturing some of the essence of that time. We call them room-houses because in the past they served the basic needs of the families they hosted, despite their small size, mainly during the summer season. People’s needs were simply less back then.

Milia provided them with two basic things. Water and chestnuts, which were both a source of nutrition and a small income to the family.
Nowadays, every single house has its unique appeal and decoration. The basic need for water is covered by the springs and electricity is produced by solar panels. All houses have central heating, plus a fireplace or a wood stove for wintertime, en-suite bathrooms, balconies, patios or roof-terraces for relaxation.
The rooms are surrounded by chestnut trees, strawberry trees and a huge variety of flora.
There are four kinds of rooms. The standard double rooms, large double rooms, suites and family apartments.

Our cuisine is so humble that it stands on the borderline of Gourmet.

The Cretan cuisine is fairly considered as one of the healthiest and most delicious in the world.

The Cretan cuisine is based exclusively on fresh, quality products of the land and the gastronomic culture of the Cretans. It has very little correlation to what is called the Mediterranean Diet. The Cretan Diet is really unique.

You will not find any weird extravagant  recipes but you will surely indulge on what it means to have excellent food resources. The vegetables from our certified organic garden, our own raised meat and the various products from the nearby villages make a huge difference in taste, which cannot go unnoticed.

Our cooking is usually done in the casserole and the wood stove.

From the wood stove you will taste daily handmade bread and yummy traditional dishes. We like to improvise in our recipes, such as roasted baby goat, lamb with herbs, zucchini pot pie, vegetarian moussaka and many more. We serve exceptional greens soups, aubergine spread (you won’t find anything like it) and local handmade cheese and herb pies etc.

We serve our own handcrafted wine, as well as many more wines by distinct Cretan wine producers.
