Handpicked for you…
Imagine being caressed awake by the gentle rays of the morning sun. You ease yourself from your cosy cocoon, swing open the double doors and welcome in the fresh sea breeze. After preparing breakfast, you sit on the deck and drink in the glorious views (along with your morning coffee). To your right is the Atlantic Ocean, azure waves peppered with the distant figures of die-hard surfers enjoying their morning fix. To your left are the rolling hills of the Cape Point Nature Reserve. If you look carefully, you might even spot the occasional zebra, eland or ostrich.
This is relaxed seaside living at it’s best. Cottage Pie is the quintessential beach cottage… a bolthole of Bohemian chic. A hideaway where lovers can enjoy sunset strolls on the beach (or snuggle in front of the fireplace during the winter months). It’s a place where artists can write or paint uninterrupted or where nature-loving families can enjoy mountain hikes, bird-watching and everything else this beautiful part of the Cape Peninsula has to offer.
The village of Scarborough is less than an hour’s drive from the city of Cape Town… and yet, it feels curiously remote, as though an invisible curtain has separated it from the high-octane stress of city life.
The pace of life is slower. More laid-back. The people who live in Scarbs are down-to-earth folk, many of them artists, writers, musicians and freelancers. They deeply value their little slice of paradise, so there’s an emphasis on earth-conscious living and mindful preservation of the area’s natural resources.
The breezy, light-filled cottage can accommodate 4 people in two bedrooms. The kitchen comes fully stocked with everything you need to prepare a sumptuous meal. Pop in to the Free Range Farm Shop in nearby Kommetjie and stock up on freshly baked bread and dairy products sourced from local farmers. Grab a bottle of wine and a bunch of fresh flowers on your way out…
Don’t feel like cooking? No worries. Cape Town is a food-lover’s dream. Restaurants, coffee shops, quirky eateries and food markets abound! Try the Food Barn in Noordhoek (expect a queue on Saturday mornings). Or Blue Water Cafe in Kommetjie. Cape Point Vineyards hosts a Thursday-evening food market offering a droolworthy selection of edible delights. Bring along a picnic blanket and enjoy the most spectacular sunset views the peninsula has to offer.
Later in the evening, once you’re back at the cottage… you can toast marshmallows and share stories around the fire-pit. To wind down the day, indulge in a glass of wine and some star-gazing. Then curl up in bed under soft sheets and allow the distant, rhythmic sounds of the sea to rock you to sleep.
Cottage Pie is the place to de-stress, decompress and just… BE.
And sure, if you’re the active-type, there’s an extensive range of pulse-raising activities for you to participate in (hiking, surfing, cycling, swimming, diving and kite-surfing to name but a few). But maybe, you just need to clock out of life for a while…
Maybe you just want to sink into a mound of comfy cushions under a shady pergola… with books, wine and chocolate all within arms’ reach and do nothing more than eat, drink, sleep, read and relax.
No-one’s going to judge you for it.
Sleeps 3 (2 adults and 1 small child)
