At The Arc

Playing cards, backgammon, scrabble and other old games; jigsaws, art equipment, knitting and crochet stuff…plenty to keep you busy! There is a big library of fiction as well as art, cookery and holistic books to immerse yourself in. Lotte has trained in teaching cookery and offers nutritional cooking courses upon request.

Elton Hall – a baronial hall in Elton Stamford – Stamford is a historical market town and has been voted the best place in England to live by The Guardian and Telegraph. See Visit Stamford. In Stamford, you will find many lovely gift shops and many local pubs and eateries – see ‘Eating & Drinking’ for recommendations.

Just outside of Stamford, within a deer park, you will find the Elizabethan manor Burghley House, home of the Cecil family for over 400 years. It is also home to the world-famous Burghley Horse Trials in September, only 6 miles away.

Sacrewell Farm and Riverford Organics – A fabulous day out, especially good for young families Flag Fen Bronze Age site- An archaeological dig with a well-organised visitor centre. Museum and exhibitions. Nene Valley Railway Museum Fotheringhay – visit the castle where Mary, Queen of Scots was beheaded

Outdoors & Active

Step out from The Arc on a circular walk that leads across the river and through fields. A beautiful walk taking in four local pubs and some history on the way: Elton-Nassington-Fotheringhay loop.

Arrange to be collected by canoe on The River Nene at The Queens Head in Nassington, and go on a river adventure! Picnics can be provided from the pub. Rutland Water – Large man-made lake with sailing, bike hire and many other things to do and see.

Ferry Meadows – For long walks with beautiful sunsets

At The Arc

Lotte will leave you some delicious local welcome treats on arrival. Please get in touch if you have any special requirements. There are farm shops, markets and producers aplenty in the local area to stock the fridge and shelves with goodness.

Shops & markets

The village shop and Post Office is well-stocked (lovely local bread, Grasmere bacon and sausages) and can be reached on foot in 20 minutes. Oundle – Thursday Mornings Stamford – All day Friday on Broad Street Try the Chutney Shop in Bulwick. New Lodge Farm Shop – Between Bulwick and LaxtonChesterton Pick Your Own summer berries in season, and pumpkins in Sept/Oct! Their Farm Shop is open year round with local honey, beef and lamb, fresh herbs – and tea and cake.

Local pubs & restaurants

The Crown at Elton – your local Sawday’s pub, this beautiful thatched building is a gentle fifteen-minute walk from The Arc and serves local real ales – try the signature Golden Crown Loch Fyne Seafood Restaurant – serving all kinds of specialities from the sea The Black Horse, Elton – a newly opened village pub in Elton.

 Highly recommended places to eat and drink a little further afield

The Queens Head in Nassington – you can arrange to be collected by canoe on The River Nene at The Queens Head, and go on a river adventure! Picnics can be provided. The Falcon, Fotheringhay – three miles away, walkable from The Arc cabin The White Swan, Woodnewton The Kings Head – Apethorpe George at Stamford- Stamford The Kings Arms – Polebrook. Locally brewed beer and excellent food.
